Werkstattkonzert 1. Set

Rodolphe Loubatière has for some time been developing fascinating solo work which goes right to the heart of sound and its material using an extremely minimalist approach: a snare drum along with a plethora of objects. Beyond the visual aspect of his live performances (where we can actually see how these sounds are generated), there is a desire to simply let go, close our eyes, listen and be overwhelmed by the infinite richness of the sounds produced. With a goldsmiths attention to detail and a knowledge of how each sound should be projected, a stereo effect, even a multi speaker set up, its surprising when we realise that this is all produced without amplification or a sound system.

Sound textures fill up the space, moving masterfully within him, like a tape / cut-up / electro-acoustic work, at times even resembling electronics, yet still these are simply the sounds from a simple unamplified snare drum. When we start to perceive in these sounds unindentifiable human voices and then towards to the end, industrial-rusty metallic clashes whirling in the space around us, moments of grace of such masterful intensity are achieved. In addition, there are scattered fragments amongst the catalogue of sounds made by Rodolphe Loubatière that these ears, the writer of this text, has never before heard from such a set-up. Beyond the extraordinary quality of the sounds generated there is also a strong desire for invention / creation / exploration of elements of sound previously unheard and not yet exposed that make the solo work of Rodolphe Loubatière absolutely captivating.
